We’ve written about ZigBee. We’ve reported on smart thermostats. Today, we’re combining the two to explore the world of ZigBee-enabled smart thermostats.

IoT expansion and demand for low-energy wireless technology has facilitated the emergence of various ZigBee standards. And as the network grows, more companies are joining the ZigBee Alliance, which provides global wireless standards and helps member companies develop products that are compatible with ZigBee-certified products.

Currently, the alliance has more than 400 members, working collaboratively to develop simple and easy-to-use ZigBee standards and products that define the IoT for use in consumer, commercial, and industrial applications. And as Alliance membership rises, awareness of the technology also goes up and creates demand for ZigBee-enabled products. And one big area of demand? Smart thermostats.

The unit shipment of ZigBee-enabled smart thermostats totaled 233,450 units in 2015. Technavio expects that the unit shipments will reach 3.07 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 67.45%.
